This year mark’s 40 years of eBook history. Since 1972, eBook adoption by software and hardware developers, publishers, and readers has been slowly chugging along. But in late 2007, Amazon dramatically altered the landscape of eBooks with it’s smash-hit device, the Kindle – now in its 3rd generation. Following suit in 2009 and 2010 respectively, Barnes and Noble would release the Nook, and Apple the iPad in order to compete in the new eBook world that Amazon had created. According to the IDPF, since 2007, ebook wholesales, in the U.S. alone, has risen from under $10 million to over $120 million as of Q3 2010. eBooks and eReader devices continue to grow in their share of the publishing market, further turning the attention of content providers, publishers, and distributors to this fertile new market.
It’s no secret that the eBook industry is the future of publishing. As printing costs continue to increase, publishers are forced to find ways to save cash and expand their reach into new territory if they wish to stay viable. The brick-and-mortar bookstores must also find ways to stay solvent in a market that is largely turning to electronic versions and has a decreasing need for the traditional bookstore. Meanwhile, new “digital only” publishers are springing up all over the web right along side a flurry of eReader devices, softwares, and web apps hoping to get a piece of the pie.
